In the winter of 2016, a routine evening at a Cumberland Express Mart on East Washington Street in Indianapolis turned deadly for Khushwinder Singh. On January 15th, three young men, two of whom were teenagers, entered the gas station with the intent to rob it. Surveillance footage from that night captured the harrowing moments when the assailants, identified as Kiree Hayes, Tyler Miller, and Damien Cobb, brandished firearms and pointed them at Singh.
During the attempted robbery,
Khushwinder Singh was shot and killed. In the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, Miller was seen on video leaping over the counter in an attempt to open the cash register, but their efforts to get any money were unsuccessful. The trio then fled the scene in a white Dodge. Their crime spree did not end there, as they were also convicted of another gas station robbery that occurred just three hours later in the 6000 block of Brookville Road, during which Hayes pistol-whipped a clerk.
The getaway vehicle, a white Dodge Stratus, was later discovered by police in a ditch less than a mile from the second robbery. The suspects were apprehended shortly after; Cobb was found just blocks away, while Hayes and Miller were located on foot in a nearby neighborhood. Investigators discovered two firearms and clothing in a yard close to where Hayes and Miller were taken into custody. Ballistic testing confirmed that one of the recovered guns was the weapon used to murder Khushwinder Singh.
Following a trial, all three suspects were convicted on multiple counts, including murder, felony murder, and attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Kiree Hayes, Tyler Miller, and Damien Cobb, who was 17 at the time of the crime along with Miller, were all held accountable for their roles in the violent and senseless death of Khushwinder Singh.
