In what was described by authorities as a tranquil suburban neighborhood, a grim discovery was made on a Sunday evening in Merrillville, Indiana. John Meeks, a 66-year-old man, was found deceased in his home in a case that shocked the local community. His death, which occurred on February 21, 2016, was the result of a violent and unforeseen tragedy that unfolded within the walls of his own residence.
Police were initially called to the home for a welfare check after a concerned family
member living out of state was unable to make contact. Upon their arrival at the house located in the 3600 block of West 79th Avenue, officers entered the premises to find a tragic scene. John Meeks had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Further investigation inside the residence revealed the bodies of his 65-year-old wife, Olga Meeks, and their 34-year-old son, Eric Meeks. All three were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
The investigation conducted by the Merrillville Police Department and the Lake County Coroner's Office concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. It was determined that Eric Meeks shot and killed both of his parents before turning the gun on himself. The weapon and spent shell casings were recovered at the scene. At the time of the incident, authorities had not determined a motive for the killings. Reports indicated that Eric Meeks resided at a regional mental health facility, a detail that added another layer of complexity and sorrow to the devastating event.
As the investigation concluded with the identification of the perpetrator, who was also deceased, there were no arrests made in connection with the deaths of John and Olga Meeks.
