In the quiet town of Merrillville, Indiana, a family gathering on December 26, 2017, turned into a scene of tragedy, ending the life of 27-year-old Ryan Halbe. That evening, inside their home on West 61st Avenue, an argument erupted that would have fatal consequences for both Ryan and his mother, 55-year-old Candice Halbe. The dispute involved Robert Stewart, the 37-year-old boyfriend of Ryan's sister.
The disagreement reportedly began over the disciplining of Stewart's 7-year-old son.
The situation escalated quickly and violently when Stewart, who was intoxicated, became physically aggressive. He then pulled out a handgun and opened fire, fatally shooting both Ryan and his mother in what authorities would later describe as a 'family dispute inside the home'. Ryan was pronounced dead at a local hospital that same night, while his mother succumbed to her injuries two days later. Several other family members, including his sister, were present during the horrific event but were not physically harmed.
After the shooting, Robert Stewart fled the residence, but his escape was short-lived. Police found him hiding in a nearby shed and took him into custody. He was initially charged with two counts of murder. In July 2019, Stewart reached a plea agreement with the Lake County Prosecutor's office. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and reckless homicide. This agreement led to the dismissal of the more severe murder charges, which would have carried a significantly longer prison sentence. In September 2019, a judge sentenced Stewart to 23 years in prison for the killings.
