Upon arrival, they discovered Riley suffering from a critical gunshot wound to the head. At the scene, his girlfriend, Alycia Caparelli, was reportedly adamant that Riley had inflicted the injury upon himself.
She told investigators that the couple had been arguing about their relationship and potential separation when Riley allegedly grabbed a firearm and shot himself.
Riley was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but the damage proved fatal. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, December 3, 2017. While the initial report suggested a suicide, the circumstances surrounding his death raised immediate suspicions among his family and eventually law enforcement.
