The man responsible, 19-year-old Johnathan Cruz, embarked on a crime spree that he chillingly referred to as 'purging,' a direct reference to the movie 'The Purge,' where for one night a year all crime is legal. Boyd was the first of three innocent men to be murdered by Cruz during this violent rampage. Just hours after killing Boyd, Cruz went on to murder Jay Higginbotham. A few days later, he took the life of his third victim, Jose Ruiz. The attacks were described by authorities as completely random, with Cruz choosing his victims without any apparent motive other than a desire to emulate the on-screen violence he admired.
The investigation into the string of murders led police to Johnathan Cruz.
