On August 21, 2016, a violent series of events in Hammond, Indiana, claimed the life of Donald Neal Jr., a 26-year-old White male. The incident began during the early morning hours at the Anchor Inn, a bar located at 6712 Calumet Avenue. Witnesses reported that the initial tension arose inside the establishment when a 25-year-old man bumped into a woman.
This physical contact sparked a confrontation between Neal and the younger man, which quickly escalated into a verbal argument that spilled out into the bar’s parking lot.
The dispute did not end at the establishment. When the 25-year-old man drove away from the Anchor Inn, Neal reportedly followed him in his own vehicle. The pursuit continued until both men brought their cars to a halt near the intersection of Jefferson and Locust streets in Hammond. There, about a mile and a half from the bar, both individuals exited their vehicles and engaged in a physical fight on the street.
During the altercation, the 25-year-old man produced a handgun and fired at Neal, striking him once in the chest. Emergency services were alerted to the scene around 3:30 a.m. Neal was subsequently transported to St. Margaret Health in Hammond, where medical personnel pronounced him dead at 4:07 a.m. The shooter initially fled the immediate scene but was later taken into custody by Hammond police. While authorities confirmed the arrest of the 25-year-old suspect in connection with the homicide, specific details regarding formal charges or a subsequent trial conviction were not widely released in immediate public reports following the incident.
