In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in February 2019, the life of 18-year-old Jvonte Gibson was tragically cut short on the streets bordering Hammond, Indiana, and Calumet City. Gibson was discovered with a gunshot wound to his back, lying between two buildings in the first block of Waltham Avenue in Hammond. The young man was initially transported to Community Hospital in Munster before being transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Before succumbing to his injuries, Gibson was able to provide a description of his assailant to the police. This crucial piece of information led investigators to 29-year-old Deandre A. Redmond. Acting swiftly on the description, police located and arrested Redmond at an American Legion post in Calumet City. At the time of his arrest, Redmond was found to be in possession of a handgun.
Redmond, who had previous charges related to drug possession and distribution, was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Jvonte Gibson's death. Following his arrest, a Cook County judge ordered that Redmond be held without bail pending further legal proceedings.
