On the night of January 14, 2017, Mario Lamont Gray, a 36-year-old Black male resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana, became the victim of a violent crime that ultimately claimed his life. The incident unfolded in the city’s northwest side at the Extended Stay America hotel located at 5810 Challenger Parkway. Around 10:49 p.m., local law enforcement received reports of gunshots fired in the area.
Responding officers arrived at the scene to find Gray lying unresponsive in the rear parking lot of the hotel, near the pool area. Despite the arrival of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office subsequently conducted an autopsy and ruled Gray's death a homicide, determining that he had succumbed to gunshot wounds. This fatal shooting marked the third homicide in Allen County within the first two weeks of the year, contributing to a spike in violence that authorities were struggling to address at the time. Investigators immediately began processing the crime scene, interviewing guests at the hotel, and reviewing surveillance footage from the establishment and surrounding businesses in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
During the initial stages of the investigation, detectives identified a person of interest who was seen leaving the hotel property shortly after the incident. This individual was observed getting into a white Mitsubishi Montero SUV, described as an early-to-mid-2000s model. Law enforcement released this vehicle description to the public, hoping to generate leads that would identify the driver or occupants. Police urged anyone with information about the vehicle or the shooting to contact the Fort Wayne Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
Despite the release of the vehicle description and the collection of evidence from the scene, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the case. Reports following the incident indicated that while police had potential leads, they struggled to secure enough evidence to bring charges against a specific suspect. As the investigation continued, the case remained open with no convictions reported in the years immediately following the event, leaving the homicide of Mario Gray as an unsolved matter on the books of the Fort Wayne Police Department.
