In the winter of 2017, the life of 39-year-old Jeffrey D. Brown of Muncie, Indiana, was cut short in a brutal act of violence. On the morning of February 14, his body was discovered near the intersection of Inlow Springs Road and Burlington Drive after police received a call about shots fired in the area around 3 a.m. Brown had been shot multiple times, and investigators recovered 14 shell casings at the scene.
It was a grim discovery that marked the third homicide in Delaware County in just a nine-day span.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, Alonzo Williams. According to court documents, Williams had been seen with Brown the night before his death. A witness later told police that Williams claimed to have 'silenced' Brown, alleging it was in revenge for the death of Jeff Johnson, to whom Williams claimed to be related. Police, however, had not named Brown as a suspect in Johnson's killing, which had occurred on February 5. Evidence found at the scene of Brown's murder matched damage to an SUV that Williams was driving on the night of the killing. Williams was arrested and booked into the Delaware County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder on February 17.
The legal proceedings that followed painted a chilling picture of Brown's final moments. It was revealed that he had been moved from another location to the field where he was shot 10 times with his hands tied behind his back. In April 2018, 25-year-old Alonzo Williams was sentenced to 90 years in prison after being convicted of murder and criminal confinement. The judge presiding over the case described the killing as an 'execution.' Brown's widow testified during the sentencing about the devastating impact his death had on their family, including his six children.
A co-defendant, Jeremy Holland, was also implicated in the case and was scheduled to stand trial on murder and confinement charges in June of 2018. The tragic death of Jeffrey Brown left a lasting scar on his family and the Muncie community, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of street justice and retaliatory violence.
