In the winter of 2017, the life of 16-year-old Antonio Frierson Jr. was tragically cut short in an apartment complex on the west side of Indianapolis. On the evening of Tuesday, February 14, 2017, Antonio was with his 17-year-old friend, Micah Sanders. Sanders was reportedly playing with a revolver, pointing it at his friend, when the weapon discharged. The single shot struck Antonio in the head, inflicting a fatal wound.
He was a student at Ben Davis High School.
Following the shooting, Micah Sanders was taken into custody. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office made the decision to charge him as an adult, and he faced a charge of reckless homicide. While the incident was initially reported as a possible accidental shooting, Antonio's family publicly questioned this conclusion, expressing their belief that the act was intentional. They struggled to understand how someone could accidentally shoot another person in the forehead.
Micah Sanders later pleaded guilty to charges of reckless homicide and dangerous possession of a firearm. He served time in jail for his role in Antonio's death. However, his legal troubles did not end there, as a warrant was later issued for his arrest due to a violation of his community corrections sentence.
The loss of Antonio had a profound and lasting impact on his family. Two years after his death, his sister, Antonette Frierson, found a touching way to honor his memory and fulfill a dream he never could. Antonio had always wanted to go to prom. In a heartfelt tribute, Antonette had a custom prom dress made, adorned with photos of her late brother, ensuring he was with her on her special night. The act was a testament to the enduring love and memory of a young life taken too soon.
