On the evening of April 3, 2017, 23-year-old Lonneisha Wellington, a Black female, was returning to her home at the Phoenix Apartments on Meadows Drive in Indianapolis, Indiana, with her husband, Alexis Wellington, and their two young children. As they carried groceries into the stairwell of their apartment building, they were ambushed by an assailant. The attacker demanded they hand over their groceries before opening fire.
In a final act of maternal protection, Lonneisha shielded her children, pushing them under the stairs to safety. She was fatally shot during the assault, while her husband was critically wounded by multiple gunshots. Their children were physically unharmed.
The investigation into the violent encounter led Indianapolis Metro Police to 21-year-old Damarcus Jackson. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery in connection with the attack on the Wellington family. The case proceeded to trial, where one of the Wellington's children reportedly identified Jackson as the individual who had confronted them and fired the shots.
Despite the testimony presented during the trial, the jury ultimately found Damarcus Jackson not guilty on all counts. His acquittal on the charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery meant that the criminal case concerning Lonneisha Wellington's death was officially closed without a conviction. The verdict left her family and the community grappling with the unresolved nature of her tragic and heroic death.
