On a Sunday evening in Indianapolis, Indiana, 18-year-old Deante Williams met a tragic and untimely end. On September 17, 2017, Williams drove with his girlfriend to Wes Montgomery Park on the city's east side for a prearranged meeting with a high school acquaintance, Eugene Jones. The friendly encounter took a dark turn when Jones entered the backseat of Williams' vehicle, produced a gun, and held it to Williams' head.
The situation escalated rapidly as Jones exited the car and fired
two shots at Williams, who was still in the driver's seat. Williams was critically wounded and, despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, succumbed to his injuries. In the immediate aftermath, his girlfriend, who witnessed the horrific event, provided an account to law enforcement. Witnesses in the park reported seeing the shooter flee the scene on foot.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives quickly identified 18-year-old Eugene Jones as the primary suspect. Their investigation was aided by social media records and fingerprints found on a phone left at the scene of the crime. Just three days after the shooting, Jones turned himself in to detectives at the IMPD Headquarters. In July 2021, Eugene Jones faced a three-day trial for his role in Deante Williams' death. A Marion County jury convicted him of murder and armed robbery. On September 2, 2021, nearly four years after the fatal shooting, Jones was sentenced to 55 years in state prison, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the family and friends of Deante Williams.
