On a Friday evening in Indianapolis, what began as a routine trip to the grocery store ended in a shocking and senseless act of violence that claimed the life of 43-year-old Carlos Castro. The male victim was at a Kroger on the south side of the city on October 20, 2017, when he was accosted by a stranger. The assailant, later identified as Jason Neal Cooper, approached Castro and demanded his cellphone.
When Castro refused to hand it over, a violent struggle ensued in the dairy aisle.
The confrontation quickly escalated as Cooper, who was reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine, attacked Castro with a knife before ultimately using Castro's own handgun to shoot him. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where the two men fought, with one being thrown into a display before the fatal shots were fired. Castro sustained both stab wounds and two gunshot wounds in the brutal attack. The attack appeared to be a random act of violence, as there was no known connection between Castro and his attacker. A father of three, Castro was a longtime employee of the Indianapolis Housing Agency and was remembered as a kind and protective individual.
Following the deadly encounter, Jason Neal Cooper fled the scene, carjacking a vehicle and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase before he was apprehended. Cooper, who had a criminal history and was a registered sex offender, was subsequently charged with murder, robbery, and resisting law enforcement. During his court proceedings, Cooper expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that a simple apology was insufficient for the gravity of his crime. He was ultimately sentenced to 55 years in prison, with 45 of those years to be served incarcerated.
