In the crisp autumn air of November 2017 in Indianapolis, a neighborhood dispute over a beloved pet tragically escalated, culminating in the deaths of two men and the injury of a pregnant woman. The lives of 21-year-old Eric Hoffman and his 32-year-old cousin, William Koenig, were cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the quiet of their Cottage Avenue neighborhood.
The catalyst for the fatal confrontation was the shooting of Koenig's dog by a neighbor.
A week prior to the deadly encounter, while Koenig was out of town, his neighbor allegedly shot and killed his dog, Petey. Witnesses claimed the dog showed no aggression. Upon his return, Koenig, accompanied by his cousin Eric Hoffman, confronted the neighbor. It was during this confrontation on the evening of Sunday, November 19, 2017, that gunshots erupted. Both Hoffman and Koenig were fatally wounded. Koenig's nine-months-pregnant girlfriend was also shot, but she survived and, following an emergency C-section, delivered her baby safely.
In the days that followed, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the double homicide. Their efforts led to the arrest of two individuals, 24-year-old Marquis Cracraft and 22-year-old Kalee England, who were taken into custody on suspicion of murder. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office would later formally charge them in connection with the killings that had so violently disrupted a community and devastated a family.
