In the heart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a young man's life was tragically cut short on Thanksgiving Day in 2017. Jacob Ryan Walerko, a 25-year-old male, was working at the Meijer gas station on Lima Road on the evening of November 23rd. It was on this holiday that his aspirations and future were stolen in a senseless act of violence. While on duty, a man entered the gas station and fatally shot Jacob in the head.
The incident, which was an armed robbery, also involved the theft of a carton of cigarettes.
The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a holdup alarm at the gas station shortly after 8 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jacob behind the counter, having sustained apparent gunshot wounds. Another employee who was in the cooler area at the time of the shooting was unharmed. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Jacob's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the manner of death as a homicide. His passing marked the 34th homicide in Allen County for that year.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a person of interest, aided by credible information from the public after the suspect's likeness was circulated by local media. The day after the shooting, police arrested 21-year-old Victor Rivera in a trailer park off of Washington Center Road without incident. Rivera was subsequently charged with murder, felony murder, and robbery causing serious bodily injury.
During the legal proceedings, the profound loss felt by Jacob's family was evident. His sister described Rivera as a 'cruel monster,' while his father shared emotional memories of his son's kindness and dreams. Jacob had been working two jobs with the ambition of pursuing a career in law enforcement to help combat the drug problem in his community. In court, Victor Rivera expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he wanted to destroy himself on the night of the shooting. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder of Jacob Walerko.
