In May of 2018, the city of Terre Haute, Indiana, was rocked by a series of violent events that began with the death of 26-year-old Robert 'Paulie' Olson. A man who was remembered for his loving and funny personality, Olson's life was cut short in what would become a catalyst for a larger, more public tragedy. His death, which occurred in his residence, set in motion a chain of events that would leave a police officer and the primary suspect dead.
The investigation into Olson’s death
quickly led law enforcement to a single suspect: his 21-year-old roommate, Christopher A. Wolfe. The connection was made after Wolfe reportedly confessed to the murder of his roommate to his girlfriend. With this information, the focus of the investigation shifted to locating Wolfe.
The search for Christopher A. Wolfe culminated in a tense standoff at a Terre Haute apartment complex. As police closed in, Wolfe barricaded himself inside a building. The situation escalated when he opened fire on the officers, tragically killing 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department, Rob Pitts. During the ensuing shootout, Wolfe also sustained a fatal gunshot wound. In the aftermath of the violent confrontation, authorities took Wolfe's 18-year-old girlfriend into custody, and she was later charged with obstruction of justice. Court documents revealed that she had informed investigators that Wolfe had admitted to her that he had shot and killed Robert Olson.
While the investigation officially closed with the death of the sole suspect, Christopher A. Wolfe, a definitive motive for the murder of Robert Olson was never publicly released. The tragic events left the community mourning the loss of both Robert Olson and Officer Rob Pitts, two men whose lives were unexpectedly cut short by a senseless act of violence.
