On a summer evening in Terre Haute, Indiana, the life of 22-year-old Quincy M. Rogers-Porter was tragically cut short. On Sunday, July 31, 2022, Rogers-Porter was shot at the intersection of 19th and Walnut Streets, in a neighborhood near Davis Park Elementary School and Saint Patrick Catholic Church. Despite the efforts of those who rushed to his aid, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community in shock and a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss.
The investigation into
the shooting quickly pointed to a targeted act rather than a random incident of violence. Detectives from the Terre Haute Police Department determined that Rogers-Porter had a prior relationship with the individual they identified as the primary suspect, 20-year-old Kole Hughes. With assistance from the Lafayette Police Department, investigators began surveillance on Hughes's residence in Lafayette, Indiana. The collaborative effort between the departments, along with crucial surveillance video provided by the Vigo County School Corporation and information from residents and the victim's family, proved vital in piecing together the events of that fatal night.
Within days, an arrest warrant was issued for Kole Hughes on a charge of murder. On August 2, 2022, Lafayette Police took him into custody as he was driving from his home, and a firearm was found in his possession at the time of the arrest. Following his apprehension, Hughes was transported back to Terre Haute and booked into the Vigo County Jail. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced a charge of possession of a firearm on school property.
Initially, a jury trial for Kole Hughes was scheduled to take place. However, court records later indicated that a plea agreement had been reached, leading to the cancellation of the trial. A change of plea hearing was subsequently scheduled for February 3, 2026, marking the next step in the legal proceedings following the untimely death of Quincy Rogers-Porter.
