In the summer of 2018, a weekend of violence in Gary, Indiana, claimed the life of 19-year-old Jazaniel Davis. A Black male and a recent graduate of Merrillville High School, Davis was shot and killed on the evening of Sunday, June 24, 2018. The incident occurred in the 2500 block of Harrison Street, where police responded to a call of shots fired at approximately 10:32 p.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered three young men with gunshot wounds and another male, later identified as Davis, who was unresponsive. Davis was transported to Methodist Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
