In the summer of 2020, the life of 24-year-old Terrance Leander Turner was tragically cut short in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. On the evening of July 8th, violence erupted in the 1300 block of Montana Street, a place Terrance called home. Responding to the scene, Gary police officers discovered a grim tableau: Terrance had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death was subsequently ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroner's office.
The incident that claimed Terrance's life was not isolated to his shooting. In the same violent outburst, a dog was also shot and wounded, and two women were reportedly battered by the assailant. This chaotic and brutal series of events left a community in shock and a family grappling with a sudden and devastating loss.
Terrance, born on August 2, 1995, was remembered as a vibrant and engaged member of his community. A graduate of Thea Bowman High School's class of 2013, he was actively involved in the African American Achievers Youth Corps, participating in various programs aimed at improving the city of Gary. His obituary paints a picture of a young man deeply connected to his family, which included his parents, Tan and Tonya Turner, a twin sister, and numerous other siblings, nieces, and nephews.
In the wake of the tragedy, friends and family mourned the loss of a man they described as always having a smile on his face, someone who was loved by everyone and would give the shirt off his back to help another. Despite the public nature of the incident and the initial news coverage, information regarding any arrests or the identification of a suspect or suspects in the murder of Terrance Turner has not been made publicly available in the years that have followed. The case, filled with violence and unanswered questions, remains a painful memory for those who knew and loved him.
