On August 13, 2018, the decomposing body of a male subject was discovered in a wooded area of the Rangeline Nature Preserve in Anderson, Indiana. The remains were located just west of Mounds State Park, prompting an investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. The victim was subsequently identified as 36-year-old David Lamar Phillips II, a white male resident of Anderson.
Following an autopsy, the Madison County Coroner determined that Phillips had died from two gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities estimated that he had been deceased since approximately August 6, 2018, nearly a week prior to the discovery of his body.
The investigation into Phillips' death quickly expanded when it was linked to a separate homicide investigation involving a female victim, Trinity Parker, whose body was found the following day in an abandoned farmhouse in neighboring Grant County. Detectives uncovered a connection between the two victims and a group of four suspects: Daniel Lee Jones Sr., Jordan Zirkle, Brittney Vontress, and Taylor Wheeler. Authorities alleged that the group had targeted Phillips because Jones believed the victim possessed information regarding the whereabouts of another individual, David Roberts, who was connected to the circumstances surrounding Parker's death.
According to court documents and investigative reports, the four suspects allegedly drove Phillips to the Rangeline Nature Preserve. Once at the location, it was alleged that Daniel Lee Jones Sr. led Phillips onto one of the trails and shot him. Jordan Zirkle, who was present at the scene, later told investigators that he witnessed the shooting, stating that Jones shot Phillips in the head. Zirkle claimed he and the others were threatened by Jones to participate and remain silent. All four individuals—Jones Zirkle Vontress and Wheeler —were arrested and faced charges including murder and criminal confinement in connection with the slayings.
Legal proceedings ensued for the accused. Jordan Zirkle was eventually tried and found guilty of the murder of David Lamar Phillips II, although he was acquitted of the charges related to Trinity Parker's death. He received a sentence of 55 years in prison. Daniel Lee Jones Sr. was identified by prosecutors as the primary aggressor and the individual who pulled the trigger in both killings, facing two counts of murder. The cases against the co-defendants highlighted a brutal chain of events driven by Jones' search for Roberts, which ultimately claimed the lives of two people in central Indiana.
