Amon Johnson, a 21-year-old male, was found deceased on November 6, 2018, in an alley situated behind the 600 block of East Missouri Street. The cause of his untimely death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, a fact confirmed by the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office following an autopsy.
The Evansville Police Department swiftly launched a murder investigation into the city's 12th homicide of the year. Investigators at the scene recovered several bullet casings, indicating a violent end to Johnson's life. Neighbors in the vicinity recalled hearing several gunshots the night before his body was discovered, providing a grim timeline for the tragic event.
For a year, the case remained a painful open wound for Johnson's family and the community as authorities worked to piece together the events of that fatal night. A significant breakthrough finally came in November 2019 with the arrest of 26-year-old Dalarrius 'NuNu' Jackson. The arrest was precipitated by a combination of police work and social media buzz that identified Jackson as a potential suspect. Feeling the pressure of online accusations, Jackson reached out to a probation officer in an attempt to clear his name, claiming that Johnson was a friend.
The subsequent investigation painted a more complex picture. A probable cause affidavit revealed that a bullet matching the caliber and manufacturer of those found at the crime scene was discovered in a couch cushion at the home of Jackson's girlfriend. While the girlfriend provided an alibi for Jackson for most of the night, she admitted he had left for a short period.
