In the early hours of New Year's Day 2024, the life of Jerry Dewayne Hale, a 34-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short in Evansville, Indiana. Hale was fatally shot in the 400 block of East Riverside Drive, a violent end to a life described as full of love and compassion. Known affectionately as 'Baby Jerry,' he was a devoted father to four children, Jeraden, Janyila, Jerream, and Jassiah Hale.
His infectious smile was said to light up any room, and he was a pillar of strength for his family, always prioritizing his children.
The community was left in shock by the senseless act of violence that took a man who dedicated his work to positively impacting the lives of young people at the Youth Care Center in Evansville. He was a beloved son to Mary Ann Flemming Hale and Terry Lee Hale Sr., and a longtime companion to Kara Givens. His death left a void in the hearts of his family, including his brothers and sister, and a host of other relatives and friends.
In the wake of the shooting, the Evansville Police Department launched an investigation that quickly identified a suspect. With the assistance of U.S. Marshals, 29-year-old Christopher Boyd Jr. was apprehended in Georgia. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Jerry Dewayne Hale. Another individual, Nykeia Baker, was also arrested and faced a charge of assisting a criminal in connection to the case.
Investigations revealed that the fatal shooting stemmed from an altercation between Boyd and Hale. The case proceeded through the legal system, and on December 20, 2024, a measure of justice was delivered for Jerry's family. Christopher Boyd Jr. was convicted of murder and sentenced to 65 years in prison. The court also considered a felony offense sentencing enhancement due to Boyd's prior criminal history and the nature of the crime.
