In the pre-dawn hours of a Tuesday in Evansville, Indiana, the life of 18-year-old Trenton Gibson was tragically cut short. On December 14, 2021, at approximately 3:50 a.m., police responded to a call in the 600 block of Cross Street where they found a young man on the ground, unconscious and struggling to breathe. While the initial report suggested a possible overdose, the caller also noted hearing a gunshot earlier.
First responders discovered Gibson had suffered a gunshot wound to his torso and rushed him to Deaconess Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injury shortly after arrival.
An autopsy conducted by the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office confirmed that Trenton Gibson's death was a result of the gunshot wound, and the case was officially ruled a homicide. Born in Newburgh, Indiana, on September 17, 2003, Gibson was remembered as someone who enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing and playing baseball. He had been involved with the Boy Scouts and the Salvation Army in his younger years and was employed at a local Taco Bell at the time of his death. He was known for enjoying time spent with his family and friends.
The Evansville Police Department opened an investigation into the shooting, but as of the latest available information, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public that could lead to a resolution in the case. The community was also grieving the loss of another 18-year-old, Olivia Huggler, who was fatally shot in a separate incident around the same time, her death also being investigated as a homicide.
