In the early evening of April 8, 2019, the life of 21-year-old Keyontae Lamarr Jones, a Black/African American male, was cut tragically short on North O'Brien Street in South Bend, Indiana. Around 6:45 p.m., the sound of gunfire prompted a ShotSpotter notification, dispatching South Bend Police to the scene. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones, a resident of nearby Elkhart, deceased from a fatal gunshot wound. The St.
Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was called in to take over the investigation into the young man's death.
The circumstances surrounding Jones's death were further complicated by a violent incident that had occurred at the very same address just days earlier. On March 31, 2019, an 11-month-old baby had been shot and wounded. While the infant survived, the proximity and location of the two shootings raised questions for investigators. Authorities have not publicly confirmed a direct link between the shooting of the baby and the murder of Keyontae Jones, but it remains a troubling aspect of the ongoing investigation as they explore all possible leads.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Keyontae Jones, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains open, with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit continuing to seek information from the public that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. Jones, a 2015 graduate of Elkhart Memorial High School who was enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College at the time of his death, was remembered by his family and community as a young man with a bright future ahead of him. His unsolved killing has left a lasting impact on those who knew him as they continue to await justice.
