In the fall of 2019, the life of Evan Rhys Pershing, a 26-year-old male from Terre Haute, Indiana, was tragically cut short. On November 8, 2019, Pershing was found dead from a gunshot wound to his chest on Heritage Drive in his hometown. Remembered by loved ones as a giving and selfless person with a big heart, his unexpected death sent shockwaves through his community.
An investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Durend Randall.
Randall was subsequently charged in connection with Pershing's death. The case proceeded to a trial where Randall faced charges of homicide and involuntary manslaughter. In May 2021, a jury returned a not guilty verdict on both of these serious charges, acquitting Randall of directly causing Pershing's death.
While acquitted of the homicide and manslaughter charges, Randall was found guilty of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and resisting law enforcement. Despite the verdict in the murder case, Randall still faced prison time for these convictions.
