On a spring morning in Indianapolis, the life of 25-year-old Mark Edward Allen III, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On May 17, 2020, police responded to reports of gunfire in the 2300 block of North Moreland Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Allen suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the death of the young man, known to some as “Mr.
Mark” from his work in childcare, quickly uncovered that the incident stemmed from a dispute over money. The ensuing investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department led them to identify 28-year-old Leontray Leotis Brown as the suspect. Brown was arrested shortly after the fatal shooting.
Initially, Leontray Leotis Brown faced a charge of murder in connection with Allen's death. As the case proceeded through the legal system, the disagreement that escalated to such a violent and final conclusion was brought to light. Ultimately, Brown pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter for his role in the shooting. He was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison.
