On the early morning of September 13, 2024, a fatal shooting incident occurred at an apartment complex in Indianapolis, Indiana. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 1500 block of Lewis Street, located near the Frank & Judy O'Bannon Soccer Park on the city's near northeast side, following reports of a domestic disturbance. The call came in shortly after midnight, around 12:20 a.m.
Upon their arrival at the Westmont Apartments, law enforcement personnel reportedly witnessed active gunfire and discovered a wounded individual on the ground.
The victim was identified as Rayion Lamont Matthews. Despite the response of emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries he sustained. The 24-year-old Black male had been residing at the complex for a short period following his release from incarceration roughly seven weeks prior. Family members who spoke with local media indicated that he had been attempting to make positive changes in his life during the time leading up to his death.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police detained a person of interest who was present at the scene. This individual was taken into custody for questioning regarding their involvement in the incident. However, following consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office and further investigation, the individual was released without charges. As of the last available updates, no formal arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and homicide detectives, led by Detective Katie Gourley, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.
