On the evening of April 27, 2020, a somber discovery was made on the near northwest side of Indianapolis. Eric Whitfield, a 31-year-old male, was found inside his running pick-up truck on Herschell Avenue, having sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Police had initially received a call about a person shot in the area around 9 p.m., but it wasn't until approximately two hours later that Whitfield was located.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner's office subsequently ruled his death a homicide. At the time of the initial reports, investigators had not released any information regarding a possible motive or any potential suspects in the shooting. The investigation into the death of Eric Whitfield was launched by homicide detectives.
As of late 2020, a significant number of homicide cases in Indianapolis from that year remained unsolved. Despite ongoing investigations by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department into numerous killings, no arrests or identification of suspects in the death of Eric Whitfield have been publicly announced. The case is one of many from that year where families and the community await answers and justice.
