In the winter of 2021, a horrifying act of violence shattered a family and a community in Indianapolis. On January 24th, 18-year-old Elijah Darrel Childs was tragically killed inside his family's home. Remembered as a protector with a big personality and smile, Elijah had dreams of being the best father he could be and was dedicated to his music.
The devastating event that claimed Elijah's life also took the lives of four of his family members.
His father, Raymond Childs Jr., 42; his stepmother, Kezzie Childs, 42; his 13-year-old sister, Rita Childs; and his 19-year-old girlfriend, Kiara Hawkins, who was pregnant with a child that also did not survive, were all fatally shot. The violence erupted following a dispute over the suspect being out late.
The sole survivor of the shooting was a 15-year-old sibling who, despite being shot, managed to escape the home and seek help. The day after the brutal slayings, law enforcement arrested a suspect in connection with the mass murder.
The individual taken into custody was Elijah's own 17-year-old brother at the time, Raymond Childs III. He was subsequently charged with six counts of murder, attempted murder, and carrying a handgun without a license. After a five-day jury trial, on October 25, 2024, Raymond Childs III was found guilty on all counts, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that left a family decimated and a community in mourning.
