Eugene Richard Lynn Scott, a 22-year-old White/Caucasian man, was killed on the evening of February 20, 2021, in South Bend, Indiana. Scott, known to many relatives and friends as “Gino,” had been riding a snowmobile through the city, something investigators later said was not unusual for him. At approximately 7:00 p.m., South Bend police were sent to the 1200 block of North Brookfield Street after the ShotSpotter gunfire-detection system registered shots in the area.
Residents also contacted authorities after hearing gunfire.
When officers reached the neighborhood, they entered an alley between North Brookfield and College streets and encountered an eerie scene: a snowmobile was still sitting there with its engine running. Scott was lying nearby suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead, and the case was turned over to homicide investigators. Early reports confirmed that he had sustained at least one gunshot wound. There was no indication that the snowmobile ride itself had been unusual or that Scott had gone into the neighborhood expecting trouble.
Investigators soon began searching for people and a vehicle that had been captured on surveillance footage in connection with the shooting. On February 24, the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit publicly released images of a vehicle seen near the scene and asked for help identifying it and its owner. The vehicle was later described as a red four-door sedan that had been observed in the area around the time Scott was killed.
By March 2, investigators had released additional surveillance photographs showing three individuals they believed may have been involved in Scott's killing. Authorities did not publicly identify the three by name, and the photographs were circulated in hopes that someone in the community would recognize them. Investigators said the individuals and the suspect vehicle had been seen in the area before the shooting and leaving afterward, making their identities important to determining what happened in the alley that night.
The motive remained unclear. Police said they were unaware of any ongoing problems involving Scott or members of his family that would provide an obvious explanation for the attack. Investigators continued trying to determine whether Scott had been deliberately targeted, what interaction may have occurred immediately before the gunfire, and who among the people captured on surveillance footage was responsible for the fatal shooting.
Two years after the killing, authorities were still appealing for information. In March 2023, the case was featured as an unsolved homicide, and investigators said the three potential suspects still had not been identified publicly. A $2,500 reward was being offered for an anonymous tip leading to the case being solved or an arrest. No arrest, criminal charge, trial, or conviction in Scott's homicide has been publicly reported in the case-specific sources located, leaving the killing unresolved and investigators still dependent on information from witnesses or others who may know what occurred that February evening.
