In the early morning hours of February 27, 2021, a call regarding a possible car accident brought Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers to the Southport Crossing residential complex. At the intersection of Weber Drive and Orinoco Avenue, they discovered 18-year-old John Neri Guzman inside a vehicle. It was quickly apparent that this was no ordinary accident; the young Hispanic male had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
Medics arrived at the scene and tragically confirmed his death.
The Marion County Coroner's Office later determined that John Neri Guzman died as a result of the gunshot wounds, officially ruling his death a homicide. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to begin the painstaking process of piecing together the events that led to the young man's violent end.
