On the afternoon of June 4, 2021, violence erupted at the Blackburn Terrace apartment complex in Indianapolis, Indiana, claiming the life of 41-year-old Eric Buchanan, known to friends and family by his nickname "Lil Man." A Black male, Buchanan was present in the 3000 block of Brouse Avenue on the city’s near northeast side when gunfire broke out around 5:00 p.m. Emergency responders arriving at the scene found him suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where medical staff worked to treat his injuries.
For approximately six weeks, Buchanan fought for his life in the hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds on July 18, 2021. Following his passing, the Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled the manner of death a homicide. The shooting occurred in an area that residents described to local news outlets as being frequently plagued by gun violence, with neighbors expressing frustration over the recurring danger in their community. One resident noted that stray bullets had struck nearby apartments in a separate incident just a week prior to Buchanan’s shooting.
At the time of the death notification, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had not released any information regarding a suspect or a motive for the shooting. Investigators urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact homicide detectives or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. As of the latest available public reports, no arrests have been announced in connection with the murder, and the case has not publicly moved to trial or resulted in a conviction.
