The shooting occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Gonzales Road in Oxnard, where Carrillo was confronted and fatally shot in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun.
The investigation into Carrillo's death led to the arrest of Michael Ortega, a 24-year-old gang member from Oxnard. Ortega, along with his co-defendant Paul Ramos and another accomplice, had confronted Carrillo in a carport after a previous encounter with another individual in the same complex. Ortega, aiming to impress his gang, shot Carrillo, who was an innocent victim. The suspects fled the scene but were captured on security footage, which played a crucial role in their identification and subsequent arrests.
Ortega was arrested a few days after the incident, with the murder weapon falling out of his pants during the arrest. He was also found in possession of methamphetamine. Ortega was charged with murder, felony possession of methamphetamine, and felony possession of a sawed-off shotgun. In August 2024, Ortega was convicted by a jury and later sentenced to 64 years to life in state prison. The case was prosecuted by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, with Senior Deputy District Attorney Theresa Pollara highlighting the senseless nature of the crime and its impact on both the victim and the perpetrator.
Paul Ramos, the co-defendant, was arrested in March 2023 during a traffic stop. He pleaded guilty to two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 10 years in state prison in June 2023.
