On a Tuesday evening in Indianapolis, Indiana, 15-year-old Keleante Brewer was walking with his younger brother and friends with a basketball in hand, on their way to a nearby church to play a game. It was around 8 p.m. on June 15, 2021, in the 9800 block of Ellis Drive on the northeast side of the city. As they walked, a passing car made a U-turn, and shots were fired from the vehicle.
Keleante was struck by the gunfire.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and transported the young man to the hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, Keleante Brewer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. A student at the James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy, he was described by his principal as an excellent student from a great family who was loved by the school community. His grandmother remembered him as an awesome and funny kid who loved sports, especially basketball, and dreamed of becoming a rapper.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the shooting, but a motive for the seemingly random act of violence remained elusive. In the weeks and even a year following Keleante's death, his family continued to plead for an end to senseless gun violence. Less than three weeks after his murder, his cousin, Jamarvyan Brewer, was also killed in a separate shooting. As of June 2022, there had been no arrests made in connection with Keleante Brewer's death, and police had not identified any suspects. The case remains unsolved, leaving a family and a community searching for answers and justice.
