In the summer of 2021, a residential street in Gary, Indiana, became the scene of a fatal confrontation that ended the life of 42-year-old Donte Denson. On the afternoon of July 7th, Denson, a Black/African American male, was in the 300 block of 39th Street when a dispute escalated into a chaotic exchange of gunfire. When authorities arrived, they discovered Denson with a fatal gunshot wound to his back.
The Lake County Coroner's Office also noted a large bruise on his head, consistent with a fall.
The incident reportedly began when another resident, 40-year-old Aaron T. Neals, confronted Denson. According to Neals' account to investigators, Denson was shooting at nearby cars. In response, Neals armed himself with an assault-style rifle and demanded that Denson cease his actions. The situation quickly intensified when Denson allegedly pointed his weapon at Neals. This prompted Neals to open fire, causing Denson to take cover behind his truck. The exchange of gunfire continued, with witnesses reporting hearing between 15 and 20 shots ring out in the neighborhood. Neals later claimed that he did not believe he had actually struck Denson during the shootout.
Following an investigation into the deadly incident, Aaron T. Neals was charged with reckless homicide, a level 5 felony. He was not taken into custody immediately but was ordered to be held on a $3,000 cash bond. The case highlights the tragic consequences of escalating tensions and gun violence within a community. The legal proceedings against Neals are ongoing as the community of Gary continues to seek justice and grapple with the aftermath of Donte Denson's violent death.
