On a Tuesday afternoon in Gary, Indiana, what was meant to be a solemn gathering for a baby's memorial turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 31-year-old Aaron Hawkins. The Black male from Chicago Heights, Illinois, was fatally shot on March 2, 2021, in the 2100 block of Vermont Street. His death was later ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroner's office.
