In the summer of 2021, a dispute that began inside an Indianapolis home spilled out into the street, erupting in a violent gunfight that would ultimately claim the life of Jordan Lamont Chatman. On the evening of July 13th, on Arborcrest Drive, the 25-year-old male was critically injured in a quadruple shooting. Gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulders left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
For nearly two years, he endured the severe injuries inflicted upon him that night.
The chaos of the incident was evident to investigators, who found three 9mm handguns and over two dozen shell casings at the scene. Three other individuals were also critically wounded in the shootout. In the aftermath, police arrested 29-year-old Kamari Driver in connection with the violent altercation. He was initially charged with multiple counts of aggravated battery and carrying a handgun without a license. The legal case against him was poised to address the significant harm caused to the four victims.
On June 5, 2023, almost two years after the shooting, Jordan Chatman succumbed to his injuries. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Marion County Coroner's Office, prompting the Marion County Prosecutor's Office to re-evaluate the charges against Driver. Despite the homicide ruling, the case concluded with a plea agreement in September 2024. Kamari Driver pleaded guilty to multiple counts of criminal recklessness. As part of the deal, the more severe charges of aggravated battery were dismissed. He was sentenced to serve two years in prison followed by two years of probation for his role in the shooting that led to Chatman's death.
