In the early morning hours of August 26, 2021, a resident of Muncie, Indiana, made a grim discovery while walking his dog. Along a sidewalk on South Madison Street, south of 23rd Street, lay the body of 26-year-old Ranjit Singh. It was apparent that he had been the victim of a fatal shooting. The investigation into the death of Mr. Singh, who was of Southwest Asian descent, quickly took a complex and tragic turn as a series of events began to unfold.
Authorities investigating the
homicide soon found a potential link to another death that had occurred just hours before Ranjit Singh's body was found. The key to this connection was Pradeep Singh, who was identified as Ranjit Singh's brother-in-law. In a seemingly separate incident, Pradeep Singh was pulled over for speeding by a Daleville police officer at approximately 1 a.m. During this traffic stop, Pradeep Singh took his own life with a gunshot to the head.
The Muncie Police Department, led by Deputy Chief Melissa Pease at the time, began to piece together the timeline of these two fatal shootings. The prevailing theory among investigators was that Ranjit Singh was likely killed sometime before his brother-in-law's suicide. While the investigation has been ongoing, with authorities awaiting the results of ballistics tests and other forensic analyses, no charges have been filed in connection with Ranjit Singh's death.
