In the late summer of 2021, a young life was tragically cut short in Elkhart, Indiana. Danton Munoz, a one-year-old male, died on Friday, August 27, 2021. The incident that led to the child's death involved gun violence.
On that Friday morning, Elkhart Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence on West High Street following reports of a shooting with injuries.
Upon arrival, they found that young Danton had been fatally shot.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 19-year-old Lonnel Cephas of Elkhart. When officers encountered Cephas at the scene, the situation escalated, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Cephas was shot and killed by police. The officer involved was identified as a 15-year veteran of the department.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, the community mourned the loss of the young boy. Sadly, the story took another heartbreaking turn. Danton's mother, Angel Mingucha, devastated by the loss of her son, took her own life in May of 2022.
