On the evening of November 26, 2024, police in Elkhart, Indiana, were called to the 700 block of Monroe Street for a report of an unresponsive person. They arrived to find Toby Fisher, a 32-year-old White man, who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit began an investigation that soon uncovered a complex plot for a drug-related
robbery that turned deadly. Using surveillance footage from the River Run Apartments and a nearby gas station, along with witness statements, investigators pieced together the events that led to Toby Fisher’s death. They learned that a woman named Ashley Seabolt had arranged a drug deal with a man named Sami Hussen, involving methamphetamine and fentanyl, but the deal was a setup.
According to court documents and messages found on Fisher’s phone, Seabolt had given him detailed instructions for robbing Hussen and a female witness who was with him. She told Fisher to take their phones, money, and the woman's purse. Fisher had messaged Seabolt back, "I got a hammer now too," with "hammer" being slang for a gun.
On the night of the shooting, Fisher, Seabolt, Hussen, the female witness, and another man named Stephonn Sutton gathered in a white Honda Accord at the River Run Apartments. After Seabolt exited the car, Fisher brandished his gun at Hussen and the witness, demanding their money and purse. In the chaos that followed, gunshots were fired inside the vehicle. The witness fled, and Sutton also ran from the car, taking her purse with him. The witness told police that Hussen, who was known to carry a gun, had acted in self-defense. When she returned to the Honda, only Hussen remained, and he told her he was not sure if he had shot Fisher.
Investigators arrested Ashley Seabolt, Stephonn Sutton, and Sami Hussen, and all three were charged with murder. In the summer of 2025, both Seabolt and Sutton pleaded guilty to their roles in the murder. Hussen pleaded guilty to murder in September 2025.
In September 2025, Stephonn Sutton was sentenced to 55 years in prison, with 10 years suspended. That same month, Ashley Seabolt received an identical sentence of 55 years with 10 years suspended, and she was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. As of September 2025, a sentencing date for Sami Hussen had not yet been scheduled.
