In the early hours of September 22, 2021, the life of William H. Erhardt, a 37-year-old male, was abruptly ended in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Police were dispatched to the intersection of Spring Street and Franklin Avenue around 1:06 a.m. following a report of a man with a gun. The caller informed dispatch that a male had entered a residence in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue and discharged a firearm.
Upon their arrival, officers were directed to the residence where they discovered Erhardt
suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced deceased. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that William H. Erhardt's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled the manner of death a homicide. He was the 29th homicide victim in Allen County for 2021.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led detectives to a person of interest. Following an interview with this individual, an arrest was made. On September 23, 2021, the day after the fatal shooting, 37-year-old John Lloyd Vires was formally charged with murder in connection with Erhardt's death. Vires was subsequently incarcerated at the Allen County Jail. The case continued to be investigated by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
