In the fall of 2021, the community of Charlestown, Indiana, was struck by a sudden and tragic loss with the death of 15-year-old Kamm Joseph VanGilder. A sophomore at Charlestown High School, Kamm was a vibrant and active young man, known for his involvement in the varsity wrestling team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a White male with a passion for the outdoors, often spending his time riding four-wheelers, hunting, and fishing.
Kamm had dreams of pursuing a college degree in engineering with the goal of one day taking over his family's business.
On the evening of October 23, 2021, these dreams were cut short. Kamm was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by a retired Jeffersonville police officer. They were near the intersection of Charlestown Pike and Salem Noble Road when a rifle inside the car accidentally discharged, fatally wounding the teenager. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Kamm was rushed to the hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed determined that the shooting was a tragic accident. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death, and authorities found no evidence of foul play. As a result, no arrests were made, and no charges were filed against the retired police officer. The community mourned the loss of a promising young life, remembering Kamm for his kind personality and his love for his family and friends.
