On November 16, 2021, the life of 18-year-old Javian K. Rhodes, a Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, was tragically cut short in a violent incident on the city’s northeast side. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Gardner Park following reports of a person down. Upon their arrival near the park trails, first responders discovered Rhodes suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel, he had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office. His death was recorded as the city's 244th homicide of that year, contributing to a historic rise in violence for the area.
Detectives from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation immediately following the discovery. They canvassed the area around Gardner Park searching for witnesses and physical evidence that could shed light on the events leading up to the shooting.
