In the late hours of a November evening in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tragedy unfolded that would claim the lives of a family. On November 29, 2021, 15-year-old Mahala 'Haley' Elizabeth Long, a white female, was killed in her home. Her life was cut short in an act of violence that also took her parents, Mark and Lisa Long.
Responding to a report of gunfire, the Allen County Sheriff's Department arrived at the family's residence on West Cook Road to a scene of profound loss.
Inside, they discovered the bodies of Mahala and her parents. An elderly woman who was also in the house at the time of the shootings managed to escape without physical harm and was the one to alert the authorities. The subsequent investigation by the Allen County Coroner's Office determined that Mahala and her parents all died from multiple gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled as homicides.
The investigation into the devastating event identified the perpetrator as Mahala's 20-year-old brother, Samuel Mason Long. After fatally shooting his sister and parents, Samuel then took his own life. The case was consequently classified as a triple homicide-suicide. With the suspect also deceased, the investigation concluded that there were no further suspects or arrests to be made in connection with this incident. The motive behind Samuel's actions remains unclear to authorities, leaving a community to mourn the sudden and tragic loss of the Long family.
