In the winter of 2021, the life of 16-year-old Juan Jose Ramirez Jr. of Ypsilanti, Michigan, was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On December 3rd, he and 19-year-old Brendan Steave Cole were found deceased in a home on Cumberland Avenue. A call to the police about a person down in a garage led to the grim discovery of the two young men, both of whom had been shot multiple times.
The Allen County Coroner's Office later ruled both deaths as homicides, revealing that Ramirez had sustained sixteen gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, 19-year-old Tre Zwieg of Fort Wayne. Evidence gathered by detectives, including cellphone activity, placed Zwieg at the scene of the crime on December 2nd. A search of his home uncovered an AR-15, a makeshift ski mask, and three handgun magazines that matched the shell casings found at the murder scene. It was revealed that Zwieg had lured Ramirez and Cole to his home under the guise of planning a burglary of an abandoned house. His actual motive, however, was rooted in a belief that one of the victims had wronged him in a previous business transaction.
Following his arrest, Tre Zwieg was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder. During police interviews, he admitted to texting with Cole and, according to officers, had instructed his girlfriend to provide a false alibi for him. The case proceeded to trial, where the evidence against him proved substantial. Ultimately, Zwieg was convicted for the murders of Juan Jose Ramirez Jr. and Brendan Steave Cole and was sentenced to 140 years in prison, bringing a measure of justice to the families of the two young victims whose lives were so violently ended.
