In the early moments of July 25, 2024, the life of 20-year-old Jathen Allen Maxwell was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Responding to a shooting investigation on the 3900 block of Warsaw Street just after midnight, Fort Wayne police officers discovered Maxwell suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate arrival of medics, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Allen County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into Maxwell's death was a diligent and lengthy process undertaken by the Fort Wayne Police Department's Homicide Unit. Their efforts, in collaboration with the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, eventually led to a significant breakthrough in the case. Months after the shooting, in early April 2025, authorities announced that they had charged 19-year-old Cameron Kizer, Jr. with the murder of Jathen Maxwell. At the time the charges were brought forward, Kizer was already incarcerated in the Indiana Department of Corrections at the Westville Correctional Facility, serving a sentence for an unrelated battery conviction.
Court documents and police statements revealed a disturbing narrative leading up to the fatal shooting. Investigators uncovered evidence suggesting a history of animosity between Kizer and Maxwell, including alleged threats made by Kizer on social media in the time leading up to the incident. According to a witness, Kizer had been threatening Maxwell for a period of time and had expressed a desire to set him up for a robbery. Kizer himself allegedly admitted to police that he had been involved in an altercation with Maxwell a few days prior to the shooting. Further investigation into his social media activity reportedly revealed incriminating posts made shortly after the homicide, including one that read 'head shot'. Additionally, Kizer allegedly posted a YouTube video in which he rapped about finishing a 'beef.'
