In the early morning hours of December 3, 2021, a grim discovery was made in a garage on Cumberland Avenue in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Responding to a call just before 2:30 a.m., authorities found the bodies of 19-year-old Brendan Steave Cole and 16-year-old Juan Jose Ramirez Jr. Both young men, who were found wearing ski masks, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allen County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled their deaths a double homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Cole and Ramirez quickly led law enforcement to a suspect. Tre Zwieg, who was 19 at the time, was arrested and faced serious charges in connection with the killings. The charges against him included two counts of murder, two counts of felony murder, and burglary. Evidence presented during the legal proceedings suggested a prior association between Zwieg and Cole, as they had been involved in a traffic stop together in August of that year. While the exact motive for the tragic events remained unclear, the prosecution argued that Zwieg had lured the two teenagers to their deaths.
Following his trial, Tre Zwieg was found guilty in the shooting deaths of Brendan Steave Cole and Juan Jose Ramirez Jr. He received a lengthy sentence of 140 years in prison for his role in the double homicide. In a subsequent legal move, Zwieg has chosen to appeal his conviction. His legal team has argued that there was insufficient evidence for a conviction and that his sentence should be reduced, citing his age and mental health issues as mitigating factors. The state, however, maintains that the evidence against him was substantial and that the lengthy sentence was appropriate for the gravity of the crimes committed.
