A sense of normalcy was shattered on the afternoon of April 1, 2022, when Zachary Smith, a 27-year-old male from Chicago, was fatally shot in Hammond, Indiana. The incident began near Oasis Liquors, where Smith suffered a gunshot wound under circumstances that are still being pieced together by investigators.
The violence of the shooting was compounded by a dramatic and tragic aftermath on the 5500 block of State Line Avenue.
At approximately 1:45 PM, Hammond Police were called to the scene of a rollover accident where they found a black Ford Fusion flipped over after having struck another vehicle. Smith, the driver, was discovered to have been shot. He was rushed to a Chicago hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events, law enforcement officials announced a significant break in the case. The day following the shooting, on April 2, 2022, a suspect was taken into custody. It was reported that this individual was being held pending the filing of formal charges. Court records later indicated that the man suspected of the crime had inadvertently aided in his own capture by dropping his keys and credit cards as he fled the scene of the shooting.
