On the afternoon of April 19, 2022, 18-year-old Nathaniel Joe Reed was driving his black Chevrolet Impala through Richmond, Indiana, accompanied by a passenger, Adolfo Armenta. As they traveled near the intersection of South Eighth and South A Streets, Reed recognized the occupants of a silver Toyota Camry stopped at the same traffic light. The driver of the Camry was identified as Jacob Neathery, and the passenger was 18-year-old Rickey Porter.
Reed exited his vehicle to speak with the occupants of the Camry in what was initially a verbal exchange.
The situation escalated rapidly when Porter, who was seated in the passenger seat of the Camry, brandished a handgun. Although Reed attempted to return to his vehicle, Porter opened fire, striking Reed multiple times. Armenta, who remained in the passenger seat of the Impala, was also targeted and sustained gunshot wounds during the volley. The Camry then sped away from the scene, leaving both victims injured. Reed was transported to Reid Health for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries, while Armenta survived the attack.
Investigators quickly identified the suspect vehicle and the individuals involved, leading to the arrest of Rickey Porter on April 21, 2022. He was taken into custody and charged with murder for the death of Reed and attempted murder for the shooting of Armenta. During the legal proceedings, Porter claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting he believed Reed was reaching for a weapon, though evidence presented at trial contradicted this account.
In June 2024, a jury found Rickey Porter guilty of both murder and attempted murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 55 years in prison for his crimes. Porter later appealed his conviction, arguing that the trial court erred by rejecting a jury instruction regarding his claim of a mistake of fact concerning the victims being armed. However, on May 29, 2025, the Court of Appeals of Indiana affirmed his convictions, upholding the initial sentence and bringing a close to the legal chapter of the tragedy that claimed Nathaniel Reed's life.
