On the evening of May 12, 2022, tragedy struck in South Bend, Indiana, when 53-year-old Johnnie Lee Johnson lost his life in a violent incident. Around 8:20 p.m., the South Bend Police Department received alerts from the ShotSpotter technology, which detects gunfire, directing them to the 1200 block of Huey Street. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite the immediate efforts of medics and officers at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Known affectionately to his friends and family as 'Car Wash' due to his love for automobiles, Johnson was a husband and a father to a young son. On the night of the shooting, his wife and child were reportedly inside their home waiting for him while he was outside. The sudden nature of the attack left the community shaken, and authorities immediately launched a homicide investigation led by the Violent Crimes Unit.
In the months and years following the murder, investigators released specific details in hopes of identifying those responsible. Police sought a gray or silver mid-sized SUV seen heading north on Huey Street shortly after the shooting. Additionally, the Michiana Crime Stoppers released surveillance video showing several individuals, including children, who were in the area at the time and may have witnessed the event. Despite these leads and a renewed plea for information in June 2024, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been reported in connection with the case, leaving the investigation active and ongoing.
